Description: I made a crop top out of an American Apparel body suit and tracing paper and here is how! ******LOOK BELOW FOR IN DEPTH DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS****** If you're sewing along with the video, try and pause and look at what's going on in the video as you go. 1. (0:44) You make the pattern based on a tank or strapless top you already own that fits you. Literally just draw what is in the picture. To make the back you just make a rectangle that is the length of the back of the tank or strapless top you're using. To make the straps, just measure 1.5 inches width and whatever you strap length is for height and make a rectangle that long (mine was 14 x 1.5 inches) 2. (0:57) Cut twice the A. Front Side piece, and twice the B. Front Cross Piece *on folded fabric* (You end up with FOUR A. Front Side, FOUR B. Front Cross -- one for each side, one for each side's lining) 3. (1:03) Cut once the C. Back *on folded fabric* (You end up with TWO C. Back pieces. One for the outside, one for the inside lining) 4. (1:27) Face the C. Back outside piece and C. Back lining piece, correct sides together (meaning the sides that will show on the outside are touching). Sew along the top length of the back piece. Sew along the bottom length of the back piece. --------- Horizontally, of course. Leave both side holes OPEN (meaning you could stick your arm through the middle and it would be a tube around your arm). Turn it to the correct sides by literally just turning it inside out so the sewing is inside. 5. (1:48) Just sew the A. Front side piece and B. Front Cross pieces together at the sides that matched up in your drawing of the initial pattern. You are (as always) facing the correct sides (the side of the fabric to show on the outside) together and then sewing them together. Look at the shape of the pattern pieces you've cut out and face them like they are in the diagram at 1:48. At 1:51 I show exactly what I mean. These are the way the pieces should look cut out of fabric. Face them at the STRAIGHT EDGE, sew down | vertically of course and then open it up. Do this for both pieces of ACTUAL FABRIC and both LINING sides. You will have FOUR FRONT SIDE + FRONT CROSS pieces as entire compounds at this point. 6. (2:20) Cut straps as big as you want and as long as your chest is to your back (varies for everyone) out of your fabric. Fold the rectangle shape of the strap over and pin it down as shown at 2:23. Sew it down close to the edge. Use the technique with the safety pin shown in the video 7. (3:41) PLACE YOUR ACTUAL FABRIC COMPOUND PIECE OF YOUR FRONT PIECE (your front side + front cross you've sewn together at the straight edge in step #5) on your surface. Put the strap in between at the PEAK of the bust. Literally just like that. Just put the front piece down (that you want to show on the outside) and then put the strap on top of it and pin it to the peak of the bust part on the fabric. Now place the lining fabric on top of the strap and the front outside piece. Place it RIGHT SIDES FACING EACH OTHER (Correct sides that are to show, facing each other. So the seams of the outside fabric you want to SHOW are touching your surface, and the strap is in between, and the lining seams are facing UP and you can see them. Now you sew along the top the way I've depicted in the graph! DO THIS FOR BOTH SIDES (obviously). Sew BOTH front pieces to the strap and lining for each side. **The pink floral fabric (3:49) is used to demonstrate the CORRECT SIDE + INCORRECT SIDE (right side / wrong side) placement / facing of the front piece of the fabric going on top of the strap. Sew exactly as I've shown, all along the top edge and then that is it. Flip it (like I do the pink floral fabric) to see your work, trim inside seams. 8. (4:45) Flip the top back to how it was and sew all along the bottom edge, just like you did the top! Just like we did the C. Back piece! You sew along the bottom and leave the SIDE HOLES open so that you can stick your arm through it and pull it to be right side out and the seams are on the inside so the top is lined. 5:06 shows what it looks like when you place all 3 of your current pieces on top of each other to see how it would look on your body 9. (6:07) Really self explanatory. You will put the back piece on top of the two front pieces (CORRECT SIDES FACING EACH OTHER) and sew all down the side seams where it's depicted in GREEN STITCHING. Just put the rectangle C. Back piece on the AB pieces and sew them together. You're done. 10. I leave the straps up to tie them behind my neck like a bikini, you can sew them down by top stitching to the back, etc. ___________________________________________ * IF YOU COMPLETE THIS LOOK, TAG ME ON INSTAGRAM @thatadult and let me see it!
